CHAPTER 12

Mamadou cleared his throat before speaking. ‘We think this was an attack purposely directed towards you, Jake. Someone wanted to hurt you and your family.’

The words didn’t register in his brain – he didn’t allow them to. If he did, then he would have to process what they meant, process the impact his work and career was beginning to have on his family.

An effect that was completely out of control.

An effect that had put them in jeopardy.

‘Who?’ he asked.

‘We don’t know yet. We’re working on it. But since you’ve been here, I’ve ordered Green Team to arrange a squad of uniforms to monitor and patrol your house. We think you and Elizabeth may be a second target. No one is allowed up or down, inside or out, without my authority. The entire street is on lockdown.’

‘Are the kids still a target?’

‘I don’t know. But I want to know why you didn’t answer your fucking phone?’ Mamadou asked as he started walking back towards the remains of the explosion.

‘My marriage. That’s why.’

Jake’s response was all Mamadou needed to hear. He’d suffered similar grievances with his ex-wife, Lori. Almost everyone in the service had. The job made it difficult for any of them to sustain a healthy relationship with anyone other than their colleagues.

They stopped by the double doors that led out onto the playground. Through them, he saw the massacre that had taken place. The black smoke climbing high into the sky. The thousands of pieces of broken glass and charred pieces of metal. The burning, smouldering wreckage by the gates where, only a few hours ago, Jake had dropped his two little miracles off.

Beyond it was the wooden structure and climbing frame, the water feature, the small garden he’d spent an evening drafting designs for as part of a competition in Ellie’s class.

Dozens of scenes of crime officers surrounded the vehicle, crawling on their hands and knees, sifting through the pieces of evidence, capturing images of them, placing the debris in evidence bags. It was a massive undertaking, and they were going to be there for hours.

In the middle of the playground was a dead body, surrounded by more SOCOs. Jake recognised her despite the blackened and destroyed face. Miss Flynn – Ellie’s teacher.

Small yellow tokens had been placed around her body.

Jake stared at her for a while, unable to take in the severity of what had happened, the sacrifice she’d made. She’d died protecting her children. For that he would never forget her.

‘What do you think I should do?’ he asked. ‘Send the kids and Elizabeth home?’

‘And you, Jake. I want you to go with them.’

‘Get fucked. I’m not going anywhere.’

‘You’re too close to the case. Someone tried to attack your family, Jake. You do realise that, don’t you?’

‘Of course I do.’

‘And your behaviour earlier, with that constable. It was out of order. I know your emotions are running high, but that’s exactly the reason you can’t be on this case, Jake. Leave it up to me and the rest of the team.
